Pomona Arts and Humanities Program (PAH)
Where the arts and academic achievement meet
Pomona High School offers a unique program for students with creative talents and interests, who also want a demanding academic program. It is the Pomona Arts and Humanities (PAH) program, and many vocal music students are members. Students select an artistic path - vocal music, instrumental music, theater, visual arts, or a multi-path option and then take core academic classes designed to promote a creative, hands-on, integrated approach to learning. Prior to graduation, students complete a capstone project demonstrating what they have learned in the PAH program.
The PAH program was developed based on research showing that on college entrance exams, students with an arts
and humanities background out-performed students who did not take these types of classes. The research also
showed the longer a student remained in an arts program, the better their results on college entrance exams.
In addition to their "arts" classes, PAH students will take AP and Honor's English & Social Studies classes together as a grade level. They will have creative hands on experiences that they will do in groups or individually. They may be asked to create an art piece, theatrically act out, write a poem, or sing a song to demonstrate topics/themes/units they are discussing in class at the time.
Many PAH students are involved in more than one artistic elective. So, if you choose voice as your emphasis, you can still take theater, band, visual arts or other elective classes that Pomon has to offer. Many PAH students are also involved in sports, Spirit Team, clubs & activities such as NHS and STUCCO.
PAH is definitely for those wanting a well rounded high school experience and enjoy learning through the arts.
PAH students are monitored by their advisement teachers and must pass all of their classes each semester (all PAH classes with an A or B) to remain in the program. If a student falls below the expectations, they will be placed on probation for one semester. If grades improve they will remain in the program, if not they will be removed from PAH at the end of the probationary semester. Students who complete the program will graduate with PAH honors.
For more information on the Vocal PAH program, click here.
2013-2014 PAH auditions were held January 11th. Any current 8th or 9th grade student still interested in auditioning for
PAH can email the PAH coordinator, Barbara Taylor.
Parent Help Needed!!!
THANK YOU to the wonderful two moms who came in over the year and finished cataloguing the music library. Mrs. EO REALLY appreciates it!!!
Pomona Show/Jazz Choirs
Outfits
Sounds and Encore will need a $100 deposit the first day of class to have their outfits ordered.
The balance will be due when the outfits arrive. Members will be sized the first day of class.
Plan approx. $150 for dresses/$75 vests, shirts & ties
Girls are responsible for getting black flash pants & black character shoes (short heel)
Men are responsible for getting black dress pants; black dress shoes; black socks
*** A volunteer parent from Sounds or Encore is needed to help size the students the first day, collect payments, get the order sent it in,
collect balance due and pass out outfits when they come in. If interested and willing to do this, please contact Mrs. Etter-Olsen.
Choreography - Students must be present for choreography rehearsals or they will be cut from that number.
Our choreographer is in Sounds & Encore every Tuesday and in Fantasia every Thursday. With the new block schedule
we are getting more done in 1hr 35min and cannot take the other block day to re-teach missed choreography,
we need that to go over vocals.
Competitions/Festivals – Sounds will attend two competitions. Members should plan around $300 for
competition fees for the year. Encore will attend at least one competition and should plan around $55 for competition fees for the year.
All competitions take place April-May, so please do not plan family vacations or to be an OELS counselor during these two months.
Fundraising Opportunities – Students will have several opportunities to fundraise money for their vocal music accounts
that can be used on outfits, competition fees, choir DVD's, Choir shirts, End of Year Gala, etc. Don't forget to utilize the
King Sooper's gift cards sold by the Pomona Choral Boosters. This is a fast and easy way to get money in your students account.
Vocal Music Rubric
Please remember to review the information, expectations and dates in the
Vocal Music Rubric.
Paper Reminders and Information
It has been brought to my attention by parents and by the amount of papers that I find on the floors
and in folders that a majority of the students are not getting information home to parents that I hand out.
Due to this, and in order to stretch the budget, paper reminders and information will no longer be sent home.
Please remember to check out the choir website on a regular basis to stay informed on what is happening.
